Book - Monograph on Baldur's Gate History (BG1 and 2 Summary)

((An OOC manuscript summarizing the events of Baldur's Gate 1))

The god Bhaal foresaw his death, and decided to breed as many heirs as possible, hoping to sire children with a connection to allow Bhaal to resurrect himself in one of them. As foretold by the the great sage Alaundo, Bhaal perished.

In 1368 DR, the Sword Coast suffered a strange plague which caused iron to degrade soon after smelting. Stable iron became more valued than gold. Banditry flourished, and the city of Baldur's Gate enlisted mercenaries of the Flaming Fist to safeguard the roads in an attempt to save trade and commerce; a city the size of Baldur's Gate depended on trade to remain viable. Baldur's Gate accuses Amn of being behind the iron degradation.

A hero from Candlekeep investigates and solves the iron shortages, destroying many bandits in the process. A merchant cabal known as the Iron Throne had created the iron shortage to create a market for stabler iron from their mine in the Cloakwood forest. This branch of the Iron Throne is usurped by Sarevok, a scion of Bhaal. Sarevok's plan is to become the Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate, and then foment a war between Baldur's Gate and Amn, using the bloodshed to fuel his ascendency to become the new God of Murder.

Needless to say, the plan failed.

((BG2 Summary))

Shortly after the events of previously chronicled, the adventurer was taken prisoner by a renegade mage named Irenicus; the adventurer had been the half-sibling of Sarovak, and shared Bhaal's bloodline. Before the wizard can finish his experiments to exploit the adventurer's heritage, he is attacked by Shadow Thieves. The adventurer escapes his confinement and helps other prisoners to escape, including the famous heroes Jaheira and Minsc. During the course of their escape, they discover that Jaheira's husband Khalid has been tortured to death. They escape into the city of Athkatla, the capital city of the nation of Amn. Irenicus is arrested by the Cowled Wizards, who enforce the laws regarding the use of magic in Amn, for his use of illegal magic.

The adventurer and his allies raise the money necessary to pursue Irenicus to the isle of Spellhold, taking ship under the infamous Saemon Havarian. The adventurer and his allies are captured after getting into Spellhold, now under control of Irenicus, who has located another bastard of Bhaal upon which to experiment.

Irenicus performs a ritual on the adventurer, taking the latter's soul. The other bastard of Bhaal also underwent the ritual, and her soul was placed into Irenicus' sister Bodhi. Bodhi releases the adventurer's allies in the labyrinth beneath Spellhold; she intends to hunt them down while using them as bait to lure Irenicus.

The soulless adventurer is transformed into the Slayer, one of the many dreaded avatars of Bhaal. Bodhi panics and goes to tell her brother while the adventurer, reverting to his mortal self, gathers more allies from those incarcerated, attack Irenicus and follow his retreat into the Underdark and thence to the surface.

Once on the surface, the adventurer and allies find an Elvin army from Suldanessellar; Irenicus has magically blocked them. The adventurers kill Bodhi and steal the Rhynn Lanthorn, using it to return the elves to Suldanessellar. The adventurer and allies defeat Irenicus, returning the soul to the adventurer and saving the Tree of Life, whose power Irenicus was trying to usurp.
